Why Recycling Campaigns Often Fail in Malaysia (and How We Can Improve Them)

Have you ever seen a trash can that wasn't sorted but was still full of trash? There are a lot of recycling programs in Malaysia. You can find them in schools, malls, etc. The banners look nice, and the message is good. Still, many people don't recycle all the time. I believe that most recycling efforts fail because it's not simple, most people don't do it every day, and the rules are hard to understand.

1) Recycling isn't easy for everyone

First, recycling can be hard to do in real life. Sometimes the recycling center is out of the way or there aren't many bins. Putting everything in one bin is the fastest choice for people who are busy with work and family. The trash cans may also be dirty or full at times. In this case, people don't want to do anything. Some people also say that recycling is "not worth the effort" because they think the things they recycle will end up in the trash again.

2) People don't know what they can reuse or recycle.

Second, many Malaysians don't know how to recycle properly. We know that plastic bottles can be recovered, but what about dirty cups, food containers, or plastic wrappers? Things that are oily or dirty might not be able to be recycled. But some people don't know this. On top of that, processes may be different in different places. Paper, plastic, and metal can be put in one area, and one recycle bin can be put in the other. Some people stop cleaning because they don't know how to do it.

3. Campaigns make people aware, but they don't really change the way they do things.

Third, campaigns are meant to make people aware, not change the way they do things. A lot of efforts only last a short time, like when there is a school play or an important event. After a few days of recycling, people do things the way they used to. Take small steps and tell yourself often to make habits stick. If people don't do it at home often, they will forget about recycling. A family will throw all of their trash in one bag if they don't have a different box for things like bottles and paper.

How to make efforts that get people to recycle work better

Getting rid of trash should be simpler and clearer. The government can make sure that more trash bins are put in neighborhoods and that they are picked up on time. Each bin should also have a clear sign with a picture that says something like "YES: clean bottle" or "NO: oily container." Community groups and schools can make it fun to recycle by giving people tasks like "Recycle for 30 days." You can also get people to use reusable things by giving them small discounts if they bring their own bag or bottle. People should know what the government found, like how much trash was recovered and what it was used for. This can make people trust and drive you more.

Conclusion

In conclusion, recycling efforts often fail because it's not simple, rules are hard to understand, and lots of people don't do it regularly. Malaysia needs to make it easy for people to recycle and give them support that doesn't change. Small things we do every day can help the world a lot.
